What is a Chronic Illness or Disease?

According to The Center for Managing Chronic Disease, “Chronic diseases are long-lasting conditions that usually can be controlled but not cured. People living with chronic illnesses often must manage daily symptoms that affect their quality of life, and experience acute health problems and complications that can shorten their life expectancy.”

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s research shows that chronic diseases are responsible for 7 out of every 10 deaths each year, and treating people with chronic diseases accounts for 86% of our nation’s health care costs. Moreover, chronic conditions such as back pain and depression are often the main drivers of decreased productivity and increased healthcare costs.

Some examples of chronic illnesses or diseases are:

  • ADHD
  • Addiction disorders
